Your stuffing box should be examined regularly, and while you should change your packing each season, you should also consider replacing the rubber hose which connects the bronze stuffing box to the boat.
A leaky hose could be catastrophic since this is a direct connection between your bilge and the sea. In any case, this hose should be replaced every seven to ten years or immediately upon discovery of wear and tear.
Buck Algonquin stuffing box hose is robust and will handle the abuse of a drive train. Stuffing box hose is NOT the same as wet exhaust hose.
DO NOT USE wet exhaust hose for this job! In the photo below, you can see a cross section of Buck Algonquin hose (top) and wet exhaust hose (bottom). Obviously the bottom hose simply doesn't have the robustness that a stuffing box hose will offer.
