KiwiGrip

KiwiGrip is a revolutionary, durable, non-skid coating that spreads quickly and easily with our proprietary roller, offering a beautiful, high traction surface. By varying the application technique, the texture can be adjusted from a rolled "pleasure boat" texture to an industrial aggressive "work boat" texture. As a homogeneous material KiwiGrip doesn't suffer from the problems encountered with products filled with sand, walnut shells, beads, rubber fleck, or other fillers. Coatings with fillers tend to wear through, and the fillers fall out leaving an unsafe deck that's hard to clean and even harder to re-coat. Coverage: A 1 liter can of KiwiGrip will cover about 20 square feet. A 4 liter can will cover about 80 square feet. Apply over wood, fiberglass, epoxy, concrete or metal and dial in the perfect texture for your application by varying your technique. A 4" roller is included with each quart and gallon.

KiwiGrip anti-slip marine deck coating is a revolutionary, safe, durable, non-skid deck treatment that comes out of the can with a thick, yogurt-like, consistency — but spreads quickly and easily with our proprietary roller, a 4" roller is included with each quart and gallon. KiwiGrip offers a beautiful, consistent, grippy surface. By varying the application technique, the texture can be adjusted from “fine” to “aggressive.”

What’s so special about KiwiGrip?
Unlike other marine anti-skid deck coatings, KiwiGrip was developed by a New Zealand yachtsman for yachtsmen. It’s not just another industrial product stumbling upon a marine application.

KiwiGrip is . . .

  • A very hard acrylic polymer providing a durable, homogeneous, elastic anti-skid surface
  • Low-glare, IR reflective finish
  • Homogeneous color – won’t wear
    through and expose filler materials
  • Available in white, cream, light grey,
    light green and light blue
  • Dial in the perfect texture for your application with
    our special roller cover.
  • Apply over wood, fiberglass, epoxy, concrete, or metal
    (following proper primers)
  • Rolls on nicely over other worn non-skid
surfaces with only a scrub and scuff-up —
no need to grind or sand smooth first
  • Non-toxic, no volatile solvents
  • No toxic solvents or cleansers
    needed to prepare surface
  • Cleans up with soap and water

Actual colors may vary from the colors on your screen.
All pastels -- white, grey, cream, blue and special order green.

The standard KiwiGrip colors we offer have been selected for being as cool as possible underfoot in direct sunlight.

We use the same water-based tints most paint retailers use. Custom tinting can be done as long as it is a light color, since we start from a white base. Dark colors are not possible since too much tint will dilute the base and destroy the anti-skid properties.

You can buy our white KG and take it to your local paint store and have them tint it and shake it for you; contact Kiwigrip at (206) 306-2222 for more information about tinting White Kiwigrip.

KiwiGrip is a homogenous material, so it doesn’t present the problems encountered with products filled with sand, walnut shells, beads, rubber fleck, or other fillers. Anti-skid coatings with fillers tend to wear through, and the fillers fall out — leaving an unsafe deck that’s hard to clean and even harder to re-coat. With Kiwigrip, re-coating is a breeze, and repairs are invisible.

KiwiGrip is applied by brush and our special texture roller, and so is considerably easier, faster and less expensive to apply than spray or two-part anti-slip deck coatings.

Coverage: 2 square meters per liter (approximately 80 SF/Gal).

Application:
Our special texture rollers make KiwiGrip very easy to apply in three simple steps — clean and prepare the surface, spread on KiwiGrip, and dial in your texture.

Prep and apply.
Dial in your texture.

Detailed Instructions:

Preparation:

Always apply KiwiGrip over a completed and sealed surface finish. In the case of new construction, completely paint the boat to a finished stage.

Mark out selected areas for the application of KiwiGrip with a soft pencil, using compass or calipers to mark curves.

Sand the selected areas to a flat finish using 180 grit paper, paying particular attention to ensure an even, flat, surface is achieved — right up to the edge of the pencil mark. Remove dust.

Mask using 1" or slightly wider tape as close as possible to the pencil marks. Check to see that there are no glossy surfaces visible, particularly around the edge of the masking tape. If any shiny surfaces are present, ensure you sand carefully up to the edge of the masking tape. Remove dust.

When applying over existing antiskid surfaces no sanding or grinding is required. Abrade the selected surfaces thoroughly with a rotary green pad or wire brush, making sure all the peaks and valleys are well dulled off. Then scrub with a detergent based boat soap and water, allowing the surface to dry before masking and applying KiwiGrip.

Application:

Apply KiwiGrip to clean, dry surfaces, with glossy areas scuffed or sanded to a dull finish.

Always apply KiwiGrip in shady conditions if the weather is warm, as this allows the coating and the roller to provide a more even finish. In direct sunlight or very hot conditions, the coating can dry too quickly, and the surface may be subjected to air pockets or pinholes. If this happens, either wait until it is more shady or thin a small amount of KiwiGrip with 20 - 25% water, and apply one thin coat over the whole surface by brush. This thin coat will fill up the air holes but continue to provide an effective non-slip surface.

Cold and damp weather can inhibit curing, so be sure your surface and surrounding air temperature are above 50°F (10°C) and the surface is protected from dew and rain.

Choose the smallest section on the vessel for the first application of KiwiGrip. You will get better as you go, so to ensure an excellent outcome, have as much practice as is required on small sections before proceeding with the larger areas.

Using a brush, apply a large amount of the coating to the selected area
- similar to the equivalent of troweling on a thick film of yogurt over the surface. Apply at a rate of about 20 square feet per liter.

Apply the loopy-goopy roller to the surface and roll it out evenly, spreading the coating to a visibly even distribution. Once that is achieved, lift the weight from the roller and glide it lightly and gently over the surface to dial in your texture.

Once the texture looks even and you are happy with the result, remove the masking tape. Removing the tape while the coating is wet allows the edges to roll over and create a nice looking radius. If the coating sets up, the surface edge will be quite sharp — but that looks nice also, and increases non-slip potential.

If you are not happy with the evenness or result, repeat the application but use less material on the second coat.

For a very slip resistant surface, allow the coating to partly dry out and then back-roll over the surface. This will make the hills and hollows more pronounced.

Drying Time

Apply only when surface, air and product temperature is 50° to 90° F (10° to 32° C). Normally dries in one hour at 77° F (25° C). Allow at least 4 hours before recoating. High humidity may prolong drying time.

At 60° to 70° F, KiwiGrip will tack up in under an hour. You can walk on your new decks without shoes in 24 hours. The product will be tough but slightly rubbery in less than 48 hours, and will reach final hardness in 48 to 72 hours.

Re-coating:

When maintenance or re-coating is required, remove all surface contaminants with boat soap to ensure the surface is completely clean. No sanding is required - you simply need to apply the coating as you have done previously. If you are competent with the brush and roller, it does not require any further masking. If you are uncertain of your technique,
re-mask the surface to the edge of the previous KiwiGrip coating and then proceed.

Clean Up:

Wash tools and equipment with soap and water while material is fresh. Be sure to thoroughly wash out your loopy goopy roller so you can save it to use for touch-up and repairs in the future.
